Difficult to believe that we're already into August. The summer is truly flying by. This month's edition features some sites dealing with hurricanes and tropical storms. As I prepare this, Tropical Storm Barry, the second of the season, is moving into the Florida panhandle, on the verge of being upgraded to hurricane status. I have chosen some excellent sites, with radio connections, which will keep you up to date on the progress of storms such as Barry throughout the balance of the storm season.
Enjoy the rest of the summer, at least here in the northern hemisphere. Our contributor list is down somewhat this month, so do take a few moments to send along a website or two to share with our ever increasing number of on-line subscribers. The Independent Media Center is a network of collectively run media outlets for the creation of radical, objective, and passionate tellings of the truth. We work out of a love and inspiration for people who continue to work for a better world, despite corporate media's distortions and unwillingness to cover the efforts to free humanity. The IMC movement started with coverage of the N30 WTO protests in Seattle. Since then we have set up IMC's in Boston to cover Bio Devastation 2000, the A16 IMF / World Bank protests in Washington, DC, and the MayDay2000 Global Day of Action, Resistance & Carnival Against Capitalism. This summer there will be IMC's at both the US political conventions in LA and Philly. There is talk about having an IMC at the Prague 2000 protests in September, around UNAM protests in Mexico City, Quebec City in April 2000, and many other upcoming events. We are working on putting up more documents about how you can start your own IMC in the near future.

The Cabaret Mechanical Theatre is neither a cabaret nor a theatre. It's more of a museum (though the owners don't like to call it that) of contemporary automata, which are mechanical sculptures. Tour the Theatre to view sculptures that are fascinating in their design and workmanship. Most are humorous (a man eating spaghetti in the bathtub so as not to make a mess). If you're interested in creating your own automata or mechanical toys, there's information available in the Education Pages. And of course, there's a shop where you can purchase sculptures and make-your-own kits.

If you are really tired of pop-up window advertising on so many public websites, I'm sure you'll find this little gem indispensable. I installed it several weeks ago, and I love it. It will detect pop up ads, and allow you to add them to a file of windows it will automatically close when they pop up again. You can add or delete windows at will. It's simple and easy to download and to use.

Growing up in the late '50s and throughout the 1960s, I have vivid memories of planting myself down, with the rest of the family, in front of the TV set on Saturday nights to watch Ed Sullivan. Every Sunday evening, on the West Island Amateur Radio Club (www.PubNIX.Net/wiarc/) 2-metre repeater, 146.910 MHz (-600), following the Swap Net at 20:00 Eastern, tune in for the "Montreal DX Listeners Net," a net featuring news about all aspects of radio, shortwave, AM/FM, utilities, scanning, amateur radio. Included are listening tips, developments in broadcasting, reception reports, HF and scanner frequency information, special topics, questions and comments. Now in its 8th year, it has had over 500 different participants. The net is operated by Sheldon Harvey, VE2SHW. Please feel free to participate. The Swap Net begins at 20:00, followed by a calendar of events including upcoming hamfests, amateur radio contests and special events amateur stations, plus a list of local events and meetings. The DX Net usually begins around 20:20 or 20:30 Eastern, and runs to approximately 22:00.
