Welcome to Vol. 5 Number 02 of the Radio H.F. Internet Newsletter. Previous issues of this newsletter can be found at www.anarc.org/cidx/radiohf/ [right here! — Ed.].

Welcome to the February edition of this newsletter. It has already been a very eventful month, what with the shuttle Columbia disaster, the U.S. perched on the edge of war with Iraq and ongoing conflicts in countries such as Venezuela, Cote d'Ivoire, and others. Hopefully a few of the items in this month's edition can help to take your mind off some of the serious matters facing our planet.

This month's Monthly Special Zone features a few items about the shuttle accident, plus Black History Month and St. Valentine's Day, including the famous massacre.

The January Survey results

Bring up the subject of food and you get an immediate reaction! Thanks to the 41 people who responded to last month's question that asked for your choice of favourite national cuisine. The choices again were: Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Lebanese, Greek, Thai, Vietnamese, Indian, Mexican, or other (please specify)

The overwhelming number one choice, with 16 votes, was Italian. Chinese came in second with 5, Mexican and Japanese tied for third with 3 votes each, then Vietnamese, French, Indian, English and Thai with 2 votes each. Finally Canadian, Greek, Polish and Lebanese each received one vote.

The February Survey

Let's go back to the subject of traveling this month. We discussed, a few months back, where in the world you would most like to travel. This time let's find out where you've already been.

The question is this: How many different countries have you visited in your lifetime (including the one you live in)?
a) 1 to 5
b) 6 to 10
c) 11 to 20
d) 21 to 30
e) 30 or more

Feel free to tell us where, if you like, but it isn't compulsory. Please send along your response by e-mail to hfnewsletter@yahoo.com.

With the age of telephone and radio communication dawning as it was during the Jazz Age, it spawned not only convenience for everyday life, but for the organizing of crime syndicates as well. Chicago's bloody history during the Jazz Age is testimony to the failure of the prohibition laws introduced in 1919. The St. Valentine's Day massacre is not noteworthy for its uniqueness of gangland murder, for these syndicate 'hits' were common throughout the 1920s, especially in Chicago. What makes the murders so special on this occasion was the effect it had on the entire Unites States public, and the outrage that followed emphatically pronounced that something had to be done.

The natural radio VLF group is a discussion group dedicated to those who enjoy monitoring radio frequencies in, and slightly below, the VLF radio spectrum (3-30 KHz). We listen to the amazing "radio" sounds created by planet earth such as whistlers, chorus, tweeks, risers and hiss on simple VLF receivers. Listen to beautiful bird-like sounds created by the northern lights while watching them at the same time; an oncoming solar flare impact our planet's ionosphere and magnetosphere live; distant lightning ring during night time hours. Study sprites and jets! Discuss VLF receiver designs. Become a member by sending a blank e-mail to (VLF_Group-subscribe@yahoogroups.com) The group currently has 278 members.

There has been a lot of activity on news groups and e-mail mirrors regarding satellite communications, be it UHF, Inmarsat, Skynet, Luch, USAxx and other interesting satellites. Searching the Internet for information on these types of satellites normally produces many websites, but they don't really offer much content for those of us with a more technical interest. This site aims to provide facts and easy to construct projects that will enable most relatively technical people to construct a good quality ground station for whichever type of satellite they are interested in.
