Welcome to the June 2003 edition. Summer is arriving here in eastern Canada, as thoughts turn to plans for summer activities, vacations, etc. Wherever you may be, I hope you are out enjoying yourself. I'd like to extend Happy Father's Day greetings to all the dads in our group.

Our turnout of contributors, to both the newsletter in general, and the monthly survey question, continues to be very low. There are literally thousands of you out there around the world receiving and hopefully enjoying this free publication each month. I'd really enjoy seeing some new names appearing on our contributors' list.

I'd like to welcome a new group of subscribers from Western Europe this month, particularly a new group from France. I'm not sure where you all found out about the Newsletter, but welcome aboard.

This month's "Special Zone" will feature sites relating to D-Day, the upcoming Father's Day celebration, and one of the largest events of the year for amateur radio operators: Field Day.

Enjoy it all, and feel free to get involved. Have a great month.

The May Survey results

Last month's question dealt with your dream form of transportation: If money was no object and you could own any vehicle, any make, any model, that you wanted, what would it be? Here are the results from the 23 respondents:
9 votes: sports car
5 votes: luxury car
5 votes: sports utility vehicle (incl. 3 Hummers!)
3 votes: luxury motor home
2 votes: sports utility vehicle
1 vote: motorcycle

The June Survey

Here is a very interesting question which someone asked me the other day. It is a great question to throw out at a family gathering, a party among friends, etc. The answers we got were all over the table. Let's see what it does here. If you could have one famous person, living or dead, over to your home, for a one-on-one, sit-down dinner, who would it be?

There are no restrictions here. It could be a politician, inventor, celebrity, musician or anyone else. Feel free to give us the reasons for your choice. Please send your response by e-mail to hfnewsletter@yahoo.com.

A premium is placed on developing skills to meet the challenges of emergency preparedness as well as to acquaint the general public with the capabilities of Amateur Radio.
www.rsf.fr
Via: Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec

Reporters Without Borders is an association officially recognised as serving the public interest. More than a third of the world's people live in countries where there is no press freedom. Reporters Without Borders works constantly to restore their right to be informed. Thirty-one media professionals lost their lives in 2001 for doing what they were paid to do — keeping us informed. Today, more than 120 journalists around the world are in prison simply for doing their job. In Nepal, Eritrea and China, they can spend years in jail just for using the "wrong" word or photo. Reporters Without Borders believes imprisoning or killing a journalist is like eliminating a key witness and threatens everyone's right to be informed. It has been fighting such practices for more than 17 years. This site is available in English, French and Spanish.

Although the League of Nations ceased to exist in 1946, its archives and historical collections survive as invaluable resources for historical research. In 1957, the Archives of the League of Nations were created. The Archives includes official records as well as portraits, paintings, caricatures, original artworks and unique objects d'art. In June 2000 Robert Goehlert led a research team to the League of Nations Archives, which included Jian Liu and Kris Bell, to start a digital library project dedicated to digitizing one of the League of Nations Archives' photograph collections.
As we look back on the 20th Century, there has been much debate over who are the most influential figures of the past 100 years; Time magazine selected Albert Einstein as its "Person of the Century." Other publications have selected the likes of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Jonas Salk.
