Welcome to the December 2003 edition and the wrap up of our 5th year of publication. The cold temperatures have set in here in the Montreal area. Perhaps it's somewhat warmer where you are. Wherever you may be, December is always a special month. Not only does it wrap up the calendar year and prepare us to head into the New Year but, of course, Christmas time is upon us.

I would like to extend my best wishes to all subscribers, your family and friends, for a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy, peaceful and prosperous New Year 2004.

Our Monthly Special Zone for December will, of course, feature sites for the holiday season, including Christmas, Chanukah and Kwanzaa. There are a few sites that I like to repeat each year, as they are always great fun for everyone in the family. I'll try to include a few new finds as well.

Important Notice
I wish to remind everybody of some changes at Radio H.F. As of October 2003, I have a new URL for the Radio H.F. website and a new e-mail address to accompany it:

New Radio H.F. website: www3.sympatico.ca/radiohf/
New Radio H.F. e-mail: radiohf@sympatico.ca

The e-mail address for the Newsletter remains the same. The changes only affect my business, Radio H.F.

We welcome any new subscribers to the Newsletter. We invite everyone to participate by sending contributions for future editions of the Newsletter.

The November Survey results

November's question dealt with politicians. The question was What current day politician or government leader do you most trust or respect, and which one do you trust or respect the least?

We only had 27 responses this time around. In the category of which politician is most trusted or respected, the leading answer was None with 6 votes. Canadians Jean Chretien and Paul Martin, plus Britain's Tony Blair and the U.S.'s John McCain all had two votes each.

The least trusted or respected politician was a runaway victory for none other than U.S. President George W. Bush with 10 votes. Hilary Clinton came in second with 3 votes!

The December Survey

From a previous survey question, I already know that we have a wide variety of musical tastes in our group of subscribers. This month we'll focus on concerts and live performances. Our question is What is the best concert or live performance by an artist or group that you have ever attended?

Please feel free to give us the details, such as date, location, and any other particulars.

Please send your response by e-mail to hfnewsletter@yahoo.com.

The IC-703 and IC-703 Plus are Icom's products for the QRP enthusiasts. Focusing on QRP performance rather than an all-in-one solution, these units covers the Amateur Bands 160m to 10 metres on the 703 plus 6 metres on the Plus model. Depending on the power supply the rig is capable of 5W @ 9.6VDC and 10W @ 13.8VDC, plus they have an internal antenna tuner. Icom engineers have addressed a lot of the concerns about current consumption and other comments gathered over the past two years regarding QRP performance. While it looks and feels like the IC-706MKIIG, this rig is a QRP version, not a replacement.

This book is a collection of over 50 of the very best articles published on antennas from around the world. The book is wide ranging and offers solutions to many problems experienced by the antenna enthusiast. The articles include antenna designs for most amateur bands. Stealthy and invisible antennas are covered alongside many interesting traditional designs. The book also benefits from two articles specially commissioned for inclusion here. The first, by Professor Mike Underhill, G3LHZ, of the University of Surrey at Guildford, UK, entitled 'The Truth About Loops', gives an exhaustive account of the performance of the small loop. The second article is titled, 'A Brief Overview of the Performance of Wire Aerials in their Operating Environments', from Jack Belrose, VE2CV. Great care has been taken to ensure that there are antennas to cover the range from 136 kHz to 1.3 GHz, receiving and transmitting, fixed and mobile. Everyone interested in antenna design and construction will find something in this book.
